FAQ
When will this release?
Current plan: Volume I eBook will be out on 6/21, Volume II eBook will be out on 7/21, and Volume III eBook will be available in November-December! The physical versions should follow soon after.
How long will it be?
Currently estimating about 450k words (roughly 1,800 pages), split between three volumes.
What will it be rated?
As a whole, it will be rated 17+ for mature themes, violence, and explicit sexual content.
Can I make fanworks for this?
Yes! For more detailed info on permitted use, visit the, copyright guidelines page
Will it be available internationally?
YES! That's the current plan - I will be using both Amazon and IngramSpark's global distribution for all formats, which should include most international Amazons, Barnes & Noble, Waterstones/Blackwell's, and more! For countries more difficult to reach, I might also open my own online shop to ship worldwide with USPS, depending on demand.
Will it be anything like your fanfiction?
For those who are coming from my AO3: this is written very differently, though of course I'm sure some similar trends may be recognized :)
Can I get an advance copy?
I may give partial copies of the final draft to a very limited number of people. If you are interested, let me know and I will make note of it!
Will there be an audiobook?
Not currently planned due to costs! I am funding everything for this book myself :)
How come you talk in all caps sometimes?
THAT IS HOW I USUALLY COMMUNICATE ONLINE (IM SORRY) BUT IM BEING SO NORMAL RIGHT NOW SO THIS CARRD CAN LOOK SLEEK AND COOL. ISNT IT COOL
Content WarningsThis story occasionally deals with heavy topics! I've made a list and tried to keep it spoiler-free. If you'd like to go in completely blind, you can forgo checking. Feel free to contact me for anything not listed or further explanation of any topic listed :)
Age Rating
There is no standard publishing system for age rating of books. I would personally recommend this book for ages 17+ due to heavy subject matter and explicit sexual content, but this is only a recommendation. Use discretion and the content warnings provided when deciding whether to begin or continue reading. However, interaction with the social media accounts for the book should generally be limited to 17+ users only! This book is not well-suited to be categorized as Young Adult literature.Does it have a happy ending?I recommend going in blind, but if you are someone who needs to know whether the story has a happy ending, click here!
Yes, it's a good ending—but of course, there's a lot of bad before you get there!

Rievaulx Abbey from the East Front, by William Richardson

Historical Outfits
By popular demand, here are some references for the kind of clothing the characters in this book might wear! While pinterest can be a good jumping-off point, lots of the ensembles there are greviously mislabeled. The best resources are those that come from the time period - paintings, fashion plates, and preserved clothing.
Avery Bedford is a butler in early 19th century England, towards the latter half of the Regency Era, generally recognized as spanning from 1795-1837, though some end it earlier. The story takes place in 1822, when the influence of the "dandy" style (think tight and high-waisted trousers, black jackets with high waists, and lots of flair) was still going! In contrast to the ostentatious fancy clothes of previous centuries, the men's fashion of this era emphasized a sleek silhouette and simple colours.
Avery, being a servant, wouldn't be wearing the very best outfits of the time, but he would definitely go broke trying to emulate it - especially as he rises up the ranks!Good search keywords for this era's style would include "regency era men's fashion" and "regency era men fashion plates." Be forewarned that there are lots of inaccurate regency costumes out there; the best resources are fashion illustrations and paintings from the era.
A pet peeve: the cravat
In the Regency Era, the cravat, or neck cloth, was MOST OFTEN tied high around the collar and tucked all the way into the waistcoat, not loose (except in certain styles!!!)
If you see ruffles further down, those are part of the SHIRT!!!! They're peeking out, not dangling.
Hence, for this era, this kind of thing is incorrect:

However, I have something to admit to you. I own this costume.
Yes, this exact one from Spirit Halloween.
As for hair, Avery would have liked the short, windy "romantic" styles of this era - complete with side-whiskers ("sideburns" is a later term for the same thing).Gericault, 1816

Obligatory Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy:

John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland - likely Thomas Lawrence
pencil and wash, 1820-1838

Avery's are fairly prominent, like the last picture above; he tries to look more mature by growing them out!
For outfits, you can look through some fashion plates and paintings on the Wikipedia pages for 1820s and slightly earlier fashions. Here are some examples pulled from them:

And of course, we can't complete this without fashion icon Beau Brummel!

There are tons of resources out there, mostly because everyone loves Mr. Darcy.
A great resource on youtube and other platforms is the tailor Zachary Pinsent, who recreates clothing from the era, such as in this video here
From the great V&A museum collection:

And for fun, a caricature of a dandy whose pants are too tight to pick up his handkerchief

Remember, this was mostly the clothing of the wealthy.
Some servants dressed in similar styles, but others wore outdated clothes, sometimes called "livery," to show the power and heritage of a household. In this way, they functioned somewhat as ornaments.Caricatures show us glimpses of
the designs that servants wore. An example from George Cruikshank in the 1840s (note the deliberately outdated breeches and stockings from the knee, instead of long trousers!):

Another from way earlier. Note servant's fine formalwear, complete with a wig!
Carington Bowles, Master Parson with a Good Living (1782).

When it comes to Avery, the old family he worked for was wealthy, but not overly so. Some creative liberties can be taken with his wardrobe; it would have depended on the family's preferences.Knowing his social aspirations, he would probably try to look as close to a modern gentleman as possible. Still, he would be very familiar with and even have worn older fashions used for livery and formalwear, which will be covered in Alistair's 18th century section more. Some more random plates from the Regency:

Alistair de Beaumont is a 16th century count.
He is both MUCH easier and much harder to dress, because he's accumulated clothing from many different eras. You might find some examples of fashion from his original era, the latter half of the 1500s, on this Wikipedia page, but realistically not much of it would be in good condition 300 years later - of course, except for the one from the Vol. 1 cover, and the scene it's involved in:
Gentlemen in black by
Giovanni Battista Moroni

The ruff basically disappears over the next century, at least in England.
Alistair probably has to start sending for new clothes to be made towards the early-mid 17th century.1630s, V&A collection

As you can see, in this era, there ARE some lacy, free-flowing neck cloths and collars

You might notice I'm crossing different countries here - the trends in this era usually spread across Europe at least somewhat. There were differences, but you don't have to seek them out unless you're a real stickler!
Here is a GREAT video from Historic Royal Palaces showing what these kind of outfits consisted of - though of course, our Alistair would probably wear slightly less fancy clothing.Something like Louis 14th would be too much - so NOT this:

However, most of Alistair's fashion probably comes from his more stable period, the 18th century. The Wikipedia fashion pages from the period are here and here; I've picked some examples from them:

Note the appearance of the justacorps, a long knee-length waistcoat, and the continuation of tight breeches and stockings! Breeches would be fading out of fashion at the beginning of the 19th century, when the novel begins.
Some more fashion examples with the justaucorps from here:

Here is another great video
from tailor Zachary Pinsent dressing up in 18th century attire!
And yet another from National Museums Liverpool
The best way to find clothes from this era is probably to flip through a book of historical paintings from the library and look for portraits, or search for paintings of the time with keywords like "18th century paintings men" or "18th century family portrait" and you'll find lots of examples.
Nicolas Lancret,
Portrait of the Actor Grandval, ca. 1742

William Williams,
Portrait of a Gentleman ca.1770

Some extra notes - of course, let's not forget the banyan! This was a loose robe for staying in.

Peale, Benjamin Rush, 1780s

AND of course, last but not least, Alistair does have a few dresses. It's way easier to find info on women's fashion, and it's also there throughout the wikipedia pages I've linked.
The one Alistair was wearing in that one scene was loosely based on this painting:Sir Peter Lely, Two Ladies of the Lake Family, ca. 1660

That's all I've got for now, I'll add more if I find fun outfits!
